  Welcome to East Washington Academy

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education."

Welcome Principal Ms. Martin to East Washington Academy!

Principal’s Message

Believe it or not…in just a few short days (February 29th) our WILDCATS in grades 3 – 5 will begin taking the first part of the ISTEP + test. The purpose of the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress Plus or ISTEP+ test is to measure student achievement in the subject areas of English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science (Grades 4 and 6), and Social Studies (Grades 5 and 7). In particular, ISTEP+ reports student achievement levels according to the Indiana Academic Standards that were adopted by the Indiana State Board of Education. There are two parts to the assessment, an Applied Skills Open-Ended Assessment (Part 1) which is a paper/pencil test and a Multiple-Choice and Technology-Enhanced item Assessment (Part2) that will be completed online. Teachers are working with our students each and every day to make sure they are ready to handle this rigorous test. EWA is having a big ISTEP+ RALLY for SUCCESS (February 22-26) to get everyone “pumped up” and motivated to do their personal best work on this very important test. Parents can be an active participant in preparing your WILDCAT for ISTEP+. It’s really simple! Just remind your student to do the following things during our testing week:

    1.   Eat a healthy breakfast! Food fuels up the BRAIN for thinking!

    2.  Get a good night sleep. Make sure you are not tired and wide awake.

    3.   Don’t be tardy.  Once testing begins, we can’t let students enter the testing area.

    4.   Read each question carefully. Test questions can be tricky…so READ!

    5.   Use all the time you are given. No need to rush!

    6.   Check your work. When you finish early, go back and look at your answers.

    7.   Eliminate answers you know aren’t correct. It’s the fastest way for figuring it our answer!

    8.   Don’t RUSH! You have plenty of time

    9.   Read the questions BEFORE you answer. This helps you to know what you are looking for.

    10. Go back into the text. That is why you need to read the questions first.

    11. Answer in complete sentences.  Always say it in a sentence.
