Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a school-wide behavior framework that is being implemented in all MCS schools. The central logic of the PBIS framework is that behavior is learned; furthermore, behavior that continues is in some way being reinforced. With that in mind, our schools aim to provide meaningful opportunities for students to learn positive, pro-social behaviors and to support those behaviors with effective feedback and reinforcement.
PBIS uses a tiered, systems-based approach to teach, identify, and reinforce the behaviors that we want to see from students in our schools. All MCS schools have teams of educators that are responsible for planning and implementing the PBIS framework. Students and staff at each school develop a set of expectations and a teaching matrix in order to teach the school’s behavioral expectations and procedures. Staff teach the expectations in all locations of the school, praise and reward students for following the expectations, and re-teach behaviors as needed.
Students who struggle to meet the expectations set at their school are engaged in interventions to support them in the process of behavior correction and improvement. Again, this follows the logic that all behavior is learned, much like academic skills; thus, when students experience difficulty, educators and caregivers can step in to provide the necessary support to help students achieve proficiency in pro-social and academic behaviors.
The table below outlines the school-wide expectations of our nine schools. At the bottom of this page, you can access monthly PBIS updates which provide more information about the PBIS framework and how it is being implemented in our schools.
