Welcome to Sutton Elementary

"Where Every Child Learns in a Positive, Caring, and Nurturing Climate!"

Message from the Principal - Mrs. Dea Young

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Sutton Elementary School's website.  The Sutton community is made up of approximately 450 students and their families and 45 dedicated teachers and staff members.  I am grateful for the support our school receives from our families, staff and community leaders to ensure that our students receive the best possible education afforded to them.  We also have an active Parent Teacher Organization and I encourage you to be a part of the P.T.O.  You are also invited to volunteer in our building by reading with students, making copies, or helping in the classroom.

I am a Muncie native and attended Muncie Community Schools.  I am a graduate of Muncie Southside High School and attended Butler University.  I obtained my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Ball State University.  My children attend Muncie Schools.  I taught at Washington Carver Elementary, was assistant principal at Garfield Elementary and have been the principal at Sutton for the past 9 years.  I believe in Sutton Elementary School and the Muncie Community Schools and, most importantly, I believe that your child can attain any goal.

It is my expectation that children attending Sutton are committed to coming to a place each day where they will put forth their best effort to learn in a safe and caring environment.  As our teachers and staff provide the tools to create an atmosphere of learning, we hope that the families  reinforce the importance of education and carry that setting from the classroom to the living room.  The partnership between the school and home is essential to the success of our students.

I also expect our students to be respectful to one another and to the teachers and staff.  Disrespectful and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.  Sutton Elementary School follows the M.O.P. (Myself, Others, Property) guidelines and our students recite the "Bulldog Behavior Pledge" each day.

I will respect the M.O.P. rules.
            I will follow directions.
I will keep my hands, feet and other objects to myself.
            I will use acceptable language.
I will show respect for others and their possessions.
I will not prevent the teacher from teaching or other students from learning.

If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the school office at 747-5431.

Thank you,

Dea L. Young, Principal
Sutton Elementary School
