"....where students think, dream, believe, and achieve."

Flyers
8th Grade

bulletFLYER TEAM EXPECTATIONS

Students should follow all school rules and policies as detailed in the Muncie Community Schools Handbook and additional handouts provided by Wilson Middle School.  The teachers on the Flyer team will strictly enforce these.  During the first week of school, students will be involved in discussions explaining and reinforcing the handbook and given opportunities to ask questions.  It is also recommended that parents and students read and discuss this information together.

A POSITIVE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT PROMOTES LEARNING

Students are to be in their assigned seat ready to receive instruction when it is time for the bell to ring.  Facing forward and sitting up straight in the chair with feet under the desk is a signal that the student is prepared to learn.  Movement around the room and talking during class time is unnecessary.

Students should bring all necessary materials to class each day.  This includes textbook, paper, pencil, homework, folder, and student planner.  Passes will not be given to lockers for forgotten materials.

Students should respect the rights and property of students, adults, and Wilson Middle School.  Hands should be kept to yourself and off of things that do not belong to you.  Writing on books, desks, and other items is unacceptable. Sitting on desk and tables or leaning back in chairs creates a safety problem and is not permitted.  Be courteous to others and use appropriate language.  Keep the area around your desk neat and clean.

Students should consume all concession items in the cafeteria.  Candy, food, drink, paper, etc. are not to be in the hallway or classroom.  Gum is not allowed in Wilson Middle School.

Students should follow the Flyer team student management  plan for procedures for using the restroom and going to lockers.  The plan controls hallway traffic to ensure safety, promotes planning and organization, and reduces tardiness.  Pencils should be sharpened or traded during the five minute passing period.

bullet POSITIVE INTERVENTION TO IMPROVE STUDENT BEHAVIOR

The Flyer team teachers will work with individual students who experience problems conducting themselves within the parameters described.  Conferences will be held to identify the problem area, develop an individual plan for improvement, and set a follow-up conference to check on progress.

Those involved in the conference may be any or all of the following people:  student, teachers, parent or guardian, guidance counselor.  We will make every effort to resolve problems and make positive changes before involving the administration office to explore more severe alternatives to deal with a problem.  Parents will be notified about problems as teachers feel it is necessary; however, we have well over 130 students, so if we are remiss in getting in touch with you, please call 747-5370 with any concerns.

 EVALUATION TO ASSESS STUDENT LEARNING

A variety of assessments will be used to evaluate student performance including daily assignments, quizzes, labs, projects, notebooks, and tests.

Daily assignments should be done in pencil on straight-edged, white, lined notebook paper.  Label all papers with name, date, subject, grade level, period, and assignment.

It is expected that students turn assignments in on time.  No late homework assignment will be accepted.

Students are responsible for gathering make-up work after an absence from school.  Each teacher has assignments posted in the classroom.  Check with the teacher for any special worksheets or materials needed.  Students may also call the Homework Hotline for assignments.  This work needs to be completed in a timely fashion.  The student has the same number of days to complete the work as number of days absent from school.

According to the policy of Muncie Community Schools, if a student is absent for 3 or more consecutive school days, a parent may call after the 3rd day to request homework.  Teachers will provide assignments within 24 hours.

Progress reports will be mailed to the home mid-way through each grading period for all students.

Grades will be given on a point system and converted to a percentage.  The following scale will be used to determine letter grades:

100 – 90 %            A
89 – 80                  B
79 – 70                  C
69 – 60                  D
59 and below       F
