Volunteer Process and Information

Volunteers Assisting Under Staff Supervision

Volunteers who assist with school activities, classroom support, or field trip supervision, but who will not be left alone with students, must:

  • Complete the volunteer application which includes a limited criminal history background check
  • Remain under the supervision of school staff and may not be assigned sole responsibility for students

Volunteers Working Directly with Students

Volunteers who work directly with students (such as tutors or mentors) must complete the volunteer application and an expanded criminal history background check through Safe Hiring Self Check.

Confidentiality

Information obtained through criminal history checks is confidential and will only be released when necessary to determine eligibility in accordance with school district policy.

Volunteer Conditions

Approved volunteers must agree to the following conditions:

  • Follow all Board policies and Corporation guidelines while volunteering.
  • Understand that volunteers are covered under the Corporation’s liability policy, but the Corporation does not provide health insurance for illness or injury that may occur during volunteer service.
  • Understand that volunteers are not eligible for worker’s compensation.
  • Sign a release acknowledging that the Corporation is not responsible for illness or injury that occurs while volunteering.
  • Report any arrest, criminal charge, or conviction that occurs while serving as a volunteer.
  • Report any substantiated finding of child abuse or neglect in which the volunteer is the subject.

Ball State University Participants

Students or faculty from Ball State University (BSU) participating in academic programs or activities with MCS, including student teaching, must complete an expanded criminal history check through the BSU Office of Teacher Education Services and Clinical Practices.

Guest Speakers

One-time guest speakers or presenters who are continuously supervised by MCS personnel are not required to complete a criminal history background check.
