Personal Background Check Process
All volunteers working directly with students, such as tutors or mentors, must complete the volunteer application above and have an expanded criminal history background check. (For your convenience, a national criminal history check can be obtained at Safe Hiring Self-Check.) Volunteers not working directly with students will have a limited criminal history background done through the application process.
Information and records obtained from criminal history inquiries are confidential and shall not be released unless required to clarify eligibility decisions pursuant to the school district policy. Once approved, a volunteer:
- Agrees to abide by all Board policies and Corporation guidelines while on duty as a volunteer;
- Will be covered under the Corporation’s liability policy, but the Corporation shall not provide any type of health insurance to cover illness or accident incurred while serving as a volunteer, nor is the volunteer eligible for worker’s compensation;
- Will be asked to sign a form releasing the Corporation of any obligation should the volunteer become ill or receive an injury as a result of his/her volunteer services;
- Will be required to report any arrests, the filing of criminal charges against him/her, or convictions for a crime while serving as a volunteer;
- Will be required to report any substantiated report of child abuse or neglect of which he/she is the subject.
Ball State University (BSU) students and faculty participating in academic programs, projects, or activities, such as student teaching, with MCS must have an expanded criminal history check completed through the BSU Office of Teacher Education Services and Clinical Practices.
One-time guest speakers or individuals making presentations to students, who will always be supervised by MCS personnel, are not required to provide MCS a criminal history check.
