About the Course of Study

The Muncie Community Schools Middle School Course of Study is designed to provide students and families with a clear overview of academic expectations, course offerings, and educational opportunities for the school year. This guide outlines required and elective courses across all subject areas, aligned with Indiana Academic Standards, and supports students in building the knowledge, skills, and habits needed for success in high school and beyond. Please Note:

1. Middle-level (Grades 6-8) subjects with grade-specific subject descriptions are to be taught in the specified grade level. Subjects that are defined by grade clusters can be taught in each grade or in one or more grades.

2. The Indiana State Board of Education (SBOE) does not restrict high school credit to courses completed in grades nine through 12. Schools may elect to award high school credit to students who complete a given high school course before entering grade nine if the course is equivalent to its high school counterpart. Local policies and procedures should be developed to govern credit for high school courses taught before grade nine. Multiple credits may not be awarded for the same course unless the high school course description permits multiple credits to be awarded.

3. After June 30, 2021, all public schools will include computer science in the curriculum for students in kindergarten through grade 12, pursuant to Indiana Code (IC) 20-30-5-23. This involves standards-based instruction for all students in kindergarten through grade eight based on the Indiana Academic Standards for K-8 Computer Science.

4. Pursuant to IC 20-19-2-14.7, IDOE defined standards for a middle school Civics course beginning with the 2023-2024 school year. In accordance with IC 20-30-5-7.3, the semester-long Civics course will be completed by all Indiana students during the second semester of grade 6.
